The Big Competition

This past weekend was a big weekend for me. This past weekend was the big, bad Square Dancing competition.

For those just tuning in (hi!), I am a huge bit of a loser and I square dance. It happens at the same time every year. A bunch of my friends get together and start prepping for the Big Competition. We started a few months ago practicing 1-2 times per week (yeah, we’re hardcore) and all that hard work culminated in the College Royal (like a big open house at the local university) Square Dancing Competition.

Now, this was our third year competing and no one was expecting much. In our first year we were still students and therefore entered in the student competition (not the open competition) and we lost (the student competition is FIERCE!). Last year we entered into the open competition because some of our set were students while most were alumni. That year we did not get last (WOO HOO!) … we got second to last.

You see, we’re not very good.

But we are pretty. Look at us being pretty:

Indeed those are our costumes. You get 10 points for costumes and by golly we needed all 10 of those points.

Entering this competition we weren’t really expecting all that much.

So we did the only thing we could think of, said ‘to hell with it’ and danced our little hearts out.

There are two parts to the competition. First up is your compulsories. You choose 2 of 4 pre-determined dances and a professional caller calls for you. Now, for this part, you know the dances, but the caller can throw in all sorts of strange things to throw you off.

*If you don’t know, in square dancing, there is a caller and they sort of shout/sing instructions at you.

We did pretty well on our compulsories.

This is our rockin’ promenade:

Next up we had our optional. For the optional, you bring your own caller and you have written the call and practiced it before hand. Our caller woke up that morning with the stomach flu but she showed up anyway and gave us a great call cause she’s a trooper.

Swinging in our optional (that’s me on the far right):

Aside from a few minor screw ups (all of them my fault) our compulsories went well. Nothing spectacular but we started hoping that maybe we wouldn’t be last.

Well Ladies and Gents, I am happy to say we did not get last. In fact, we got a ribbon! A RIBBON! And it wasn’t even one of those ribbons that they give to everyone for ‘Participation.’

Nope, this was a tried and true Third Place Ribbon won with lots of hard blood, sweat and tears (the blood and tears part is only a partial truth as long as ‘partial truth’ means ‘lie’).

To say the least, we were ecstatic:

One last shot, me and my partner. You are correct if you have observed that this is not The Boyfriend. Matt would not be caught dead square dancing. He’s more of a quiet and aloof type.
